BIMAL KUNDU

Born : 1954

Born in Kolkata, he completed his graduation from the prestigious Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta, gaining excellence in painting and sculpture. He is adept in Sculpture, achieving First-Class-First in 1981 for Sculptures.

His sculptures are influenced and inspired by ‘semi-realistic cubism’. His sculptures look extraordinarily simple, but have an individuality and uniqueness, telling an exclusive story. He is extremely honoured and revered for his sculptures, and the most impressive and overwhelming works being; the ‘Bird’ at the Kolkata Airport, measuring 8 feet in height made up of aluminium; ‘Birpurush’, a sculpture of 14 feet high at Nicco Park; and the concrete sculpture ‘Kolkata’, 10 feet in height, at VIP Road, Kolkata.

He joined the ‘Society of Contemporary Artists’, Calcutta in 1989.

His artworks also form part of many private and public collections in various galleries and museums in India, like the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata; the Musuem of Bengal Modern Art, Kolkata; and the Venkatappa Art Gallery, Karnataka.

Exhibition

(i) Solos : 1992 – First Exhibition in New Delhi; 2022 – ‘Etching Tranquillity’, Odisha State Museum, Bhubaneswar.

(ii) He also participated in many group exhibitions in CIMA Gallery, Kolkata; Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi; Cymroza Art Gallery, Mumbai; and Gallery Sumukha, Bengaluru.

Awards & Honours

(i) Won Rajaram Scholarship, from the Government of Karnataka.

(ii) H.C. Ghosh Award and Navonmeshika Award.

(iii) Lalit Kala Akademi National Award.

(iv) He is also a member of the West Bengal State Charukala Parishad.
