Born at Patuli, Bardhaman, West Bengal, he completed his graduation from the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta and did his post-graduation from Kala Bhavan, Visva – Bharati University, Santiniketan in Fine Arts in 1989.

Similar to M. F. Husain, he too started his career as a billboard artist, and worked in Calcutta as a graphic designer for the Economic Times.

His works are intense, rustic, and austere, deeply influenced by the tribal and rural themes, for his special affinity with the tribal communities like the Santhals, and his paintings also depict certain definite and virtuous traits; like strong, sensible, resilient, and undefeated by adverse situations and circumstances.
