He graduated from the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta; and then learnt the Graphics Art and Murals from Prof S.W. Hayter in Paris, from 1956 to 1966.
He gained fame for his ‘Christ’ and ‘Radha’. His artworks primarily involve the female face and form, where the characters are romanticised, inhabiting a dream-like universe between innocence and sensuality. His works are inspired by everyday life, but themes are deeply rooted in fantasy.
From 1971 to 1973, he became the Principal of the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta. He also became a lecturer of Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan and subsequently headed the Department of Painting, Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, till his last breath.
He joined the ‘Society of Contemporary Artists’, Calcutta in 1960 as a member.
