About Artist

PROKASH KARMAKAR
Born : 1933 - 2014

An exemplary Indian painter, born in Kolkata, to Prahlad Karmakar, a well-known artist of his time.

He gained his initial knowledge about painting from his father. He joined the Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta, but he left the college before he could complete his graduation, due to familial responsibilities and insufficient wealth, and it was under the tutelage of Nirode Majumdar that he learnt and gained expertise about the intricacies and nuances of different artistic forms, techniques, concepts, the breaking of forms and the coherence of lines.

He gained fame for his figurative monochrome paintings; nudes and landscapes, generally painted with vibrancy along with intricate textures and bold lines. His artworks reflected his wisdom and rendition or evaluation of the nature (both organized and disrupted), life (both urban and rural) and form (from soft to sharp).

His works form a part of the permanent collection of numerous galleries and museums in India, such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata; Jane & Kito de Bour, Dubai; Musuem of Bengal Modern Art, Kolkata.

He was the Founder Member of the ‘Society of Contemporary Artists’, Calcutta and the ‘Calcutta Painters’.
