SUNIL KUMAR DAS

Born : 1952 - 2021

Born in Kolkata, he completed his graduation from the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata in 1975. He was awarded a National Scholarship from Ministry of Culture, Government of India, for further advancement of his studies on Sculpture from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan from 1977 to 1979.

His lines and contours are full of life with subtle inflections of stones and contemporary characteristics, and posture and poise acts as his most powerful tools. He developed an idiom by combining metal and stone, worked out in two different method – casting and carving, displaying two tonal effects – of deepening darkness and of shining light. He used one method and material for inanimate compositions and another for animate creations.

He was a member of the prestigious Kolkata-based group; the Society of Contemporary Artists.

His sculptures are found in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Punjab Museum, Chandigarh and the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata.
