Born in Calcutta, he graduated with First-Class in Fine Arts from the Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta in 1981. He was awarded a Scholarship by Ministry of Culture, Government of India in 1981-82 under Bikash Bhattacherjee. Also, he studied at College of Visual Art, Kolkata, under Shuvaprasanna.

He is considered as one of the leading painters from the Bengal School of Art and was greatly fascinated and influenced by works of Gaganendranath Tagore. He combines a sense of satire with contemporary conditions and his paintings focus strongly on the ordinary man and the contradictions they face.

He mostly works in Oil on Canvas, because the medium lets him experiment the most and helps him to depict modern life, which in some ways is surrealistic.
