SUHAS ROY
Born : 1936-2016
- Born in Bangladesh.
- He graduated from the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta; and then learnt the Graphics Art and Murals from Prof S.W. Hayter in Paris, from 1956 to 1966.
- He gained fame for his ‘Christ’ and ‘Radha’. His artworks primarily involve the female face and form, where the characters are romanticised, inhabiting a dream-like universe between innocence and sensuality. His works are inspired by everyday life, but themes are deeply rooted in fantasy.
- From 1971 to 1973, he became the Principal of the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta. He also became a lecturer of Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan and subsequently headed the Department of Painting, Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, till his last breath.
- He joined the ‘Society of Contemporary Artists’, Calcutta in 1960 as a member.

- The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; and the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi.
- ‘The Asian Graphic Prints Traveling Exhibition’, the USA; ‘The Tokyo Print Biennale’, Japan; and several other international exhibitions in France, Yugoslavia, Romania and Hungary.
Awards & Honours
- 1958 – Awarded for his great achievements at the Annual exhibition of the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta.
- 1969 – The AIFACS Award.
- 1973 – Awarded an honorary certificate by the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata.
